FAQS

What is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and how does it work?

IPL uses light form the electromagnetic spectrum, which is pulsed into the skin.

What makes our laser and IPL systems so advanced?

We use a unique platform from Alma Lasers, an award-winning company that produces lasers that use the most advanced technology for the aesthetic and surgical industries. This platform allows us to use a range of laser and IPL treatments so we can treat many different skin problems. With so many companies offering these treatments it is so important you not only chose experienced and qualified practitioners but also that the machines comply with all the regulations and are safe and effective.

What areas can be treated with IPL skin treatments?

Patients come to us with skin problems on many parts of the body. Whilst most patients are concerned with their face, many come seeking treatment for age spots on their hands and body, which can appear very ageing. More and more patients are looking for treatments for their neck and décolleté, which can also show early signs of ageing through sun damage and in women through wearing perfume on the neck which causes discolouration and mottled skin. Other body areas including the shoulders and arms can be treated as well as intimate areas where pigmentation can be of concern.

Is there anything I can do before a consultation to prepare the treatment area?

For our female patients there is no need to come free of make-up as we will remove this if we have to. It would be advisable to bring some make-up with you to touch up following the consultation/treatment. It is also very important that there is no tan in the treatment area. This includes fake tans, sun bed tan and tan from the sun. If you are on any medication it is also advisable to bring these along in order to check if they will affect the treatment.

If I have had treatment at another clinic can I have treatment straight away without a patch test?

Unfortunately we will always need to perform a patch test on patients new to us and wait a week before we can perform the full treatment. This is in the interest of your safety and to ensure you have an effective treatment.

Will the treatment hurt?

The treatment has been described like an elastic band ‘flicking’ on the skin. Because of the advanced chiller tip in the treatment head of the IPL, the skin can be pre cooled so that the feeling is comfortable and pain-free. For our more sensitive patients we do have many other pain management options and aim to make the treatment as comfortable as possible.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on the skin problem. Sometimes one-off treatments can achieve the results that patients want. Other cases require a short course of treatments and may even combine this with specialised skincare to enhance and maintain the results.

Are there any risks associated with this treatment?

We discuss all risks at the consultation and cover side effects including reddening, burning, blistering, bruising, swelling and hyper and hypo pigmentation
